WHAT THIS POLICY COVERS
This Privacy Policy explains what GymRank collects, why it collects it, and what happens to it. It covers the GymRank app and the pages on our website. We have written it from an inventory of what the app actually stores and sends, so that what you read here matches what the code does.
WHAT YOU GIVE US WHEN YOU SIGN UP
You create an account with an email address and a password. We store your email address because it is how you sign in and how we can reach you about your account. On your profile you can set a username, an avatar, and a short bio. Your username, avatar and bio are public — they appear next to you on leaderboards.
YOUR TRAINING INFORMATION
We store the workouts and sets you log, the personal records you submit, and the statistics we calculate from them, such as your streak and your strength score. We also store the answers you give in the onboarding strength assessment, which is what your first score is built from.
YOUR BODYWEIGHT AND SEX ARE PART OF A PUBLIC SCORE
Please read this part carefully, because it is easy to assume otherwise.
If you enter your bodyweight, we store it in kilograms, because strength scoring needs it. We never display your bodyweight as a number to anyone. But your strength score is public, and that score is calculated from the weight you lifted together with your bodyweight — so anyone who can see your score and your lift can work your bodyweight out. Treat your bodyweight as public information.
Leaderboards are split by sex, and you appear on the board for the sex set on your account. We never show that setting as a field on your profile, but which board you are on makes it visible. Treat it as public too.
If either of those is something you would rather not share, the way to keep it private is not to post a PR.
LOCATION — WHAT THE APP USES, AND WHAT WE KEEP
These are two different things, so we have separated them.
What the app uses while you are using it. If you give the app location permission, it reads your device's location when you are picking a home gym, so it can sort the gyms near you, and again whenever you have the map open, so it can show where you are on it. That reading happens on your device to draw the screen you are looking at. It is not a one-off: any time the map is open and permission is granted, the app is reading your location.
What we keep. What we store is the gym you chose and the wider area it sits in — a single map cell covering roughly 36 square kilometres. We do not store a precise coordinate for you, we do not keep a history of where you have been, and we do not follow your movements between sessions. Your home gym and the board it puts you on are visible to other lifters.
You can turn location permission off in your device settings at any time. The app still works; you pick a gym by searching instead, and the map stops showing where you are.
PR CLIPS AND WHAT IS PUBLIC
Recording a clip is required to log a PR. A PR is created from the clip you upload, so there is no PR without one.
That clip — the video, and a still image taken from it — is stored in our media storage and shown with that PR on its board, and on a share page if you choose to share it. Treat a clip you post as public. Your workouts themselves are not published as a feed; what appears on a board is the personal record you submitted.
FOLLOWS, BLOCKS AND REPORTS
We store who you follow, who you have blocked, and any content you report. Blocks and reports exist so the app can be kept clean, and we keep them for as long as your account exists.
NOTIFICATIONS
If you allow notifications, your device gives us a notification token, which we store against your account so we can send you a notification. We also record when the app is open in front of you, so that we do not send you a notification about something you are already looking at. Turning notifications off in your device settings stops them.
FINDING FRIENDS FROM YOUR CONTACTS
If you choose to look for friends from your contacts, your contacts stay on your device. The app turns each one into an irreversible fingerprint on your phone and sends only those fingerprints, so that our server can tell us which of them already have a GymRank account. We do not receive names, numbers or email addresses from your address book, we do not keep the fingerprints after the check, and we never upload your contacts.
CAMERA AND PHOTOS
The camera is used when you film a lift or scan a friend's invite code, and only then. For your photo library we ask for permission to ADD only: the app can save a clip you made to your library, and it cannot read your library or see the photos in it.
DIAGNOSTICS
The app asks the operating system for crash and performance summaries and writes them to your device's own system log. They are not sent to us, not stored on our servers, and not shared with any outside company. Apple separately provides us with crash reports from TestFlight and the App Store under Apple's own terms.
WHAT STAYS ONLY ON YOUR DEVICE
Some things never leave your phone at all. Your choice of pounds or kilograms, the name of your home gym kept for quick display, a bodyweight entered for the set editor, whether a first-run tip has been shown, and a marker recording when contacts were last checked are stored in the app's own storage on your device. They are readable only by GymRank and are removed when you delete the app.
WE DO NOT SELL YOUR DATA
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with data brokers. GymRank contains no advertising software and no attribution or tracking software of any kind, and no third-party analytics. We do count how far people get through first-run setup, on our own servers, using an app-installation identifier that is not linked to you before you create an account and that disappears when you delete the app. Nothing about you is combined with data from other companies to target advertising, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
WHO ELSE HANDLES YOUR DATA
We use service providers to run GymRank: a hosting and database provider that stores your account, your training data and the social graph, and a media storage provider that stores clips and their still images. They process this data on our behalf so the app can work, and not for their own purposes.
DELETING YOUR ACCOUNT AND YOUR DATA
You can delete your account from Settings at any time. Deleting is permanent and cannot be undone.
What deleting removes straight away: your account, your profile, every workout and set you logged, every personal record, your league standings and titles, your follows and blocks, your notification settings and notification token, and the reports you filed. Your personal records stop appearing on any leaderboard.
What happens to your clips: the video files and their still images are queued for deletion from our media storage before anything else is erased, and a background job clears them out soon afterwards. That part is not instant, and a large account can take a few rounds to work through. If our storage provider keeps refusing a file we stop retrying after a few attempts and keep a record that the file was not erased, so it can be dealt with by hand.
If you want us to check on a file, email gymranksupport@gmail.com. The same address works if you want a copy of your data, or you want something taken down without closing your account.
CHILDREN
GymRank is not for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13, and if we learn that we have, we will delete the account.
CHANGES AND HOW TO REACH US
We will update this policy when what the app does changes, and the current version always ships with the app. If you have a question about your data, or you want us to act on it, email gymranksupport@gmail.com.
